I started to feel they left out the deep roots of farming in this country, but perhaps I was reflecting on the love of my own Grandpa and time spent with him hours on end, year after year working the fields. Thinking about it today, working the dirt today, I just felt like we, the farmers, needed a better understanding of what we do.

And on the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need a caretaker." So God made a farmer.
God said, "I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the field, milk cows again, eat supper, then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board." So God made a farmer.
God said, "I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn colt and watch it die, then dry his eyes and say,'Maybe next year,' I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from an ash tree, shoe a horse with hunk of car tire, who can make a harness out hay wire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. Who, during planting time and harvest season will finish his 40-hour week by Tuesday noon and then, paining from tractor back, put in another 72 hours." So God made the farmer.
God said, "I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bales, yet gentle enough to yean lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-comb pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the leg of a meadowlark."
It had to be somebody who'd plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed, and brake, and disk, and plow, and plant, and tie the fleece and strain the milk, . Somebody who'd bale a family together with the soft, strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh, and then sigh and then reply with smiling eyes when his son says that he wants to spend his life doing what Dad does. "So God made a farmer."

"Life of a Farmer" features farmers of different ages on farms of different sizes and types. The documentary features the values and traditions they have in common and the challenges of adapting to new technologies, passing the farm to the next generation and lessons learned from a life on the farm. The families are not related, but their lives are all devoted to farming some of Ohio's most common crops on farms in Urbana, St. Paris, Delaware, New Paris and Plain City. Through five different stories, this special Our Ohio documentary seeks to tell one story: the life of an Ohio farmer.
The five farmers profiled are Abe Hostetler, a 90-year-old retired farmer; Kenny Lensman, a 53-year-old farmer; Tim Jordan, a 22-year-old farmer; Luke Davis, a 14-year-old aspiring farmer; and Randi and Randy Dibert and their three-month-old daugher, Lydia.

Farmer
A farmer (also called an agriculturer) is a person engaged in agriculture, raising living organisms for food or raw materials. The term usually applies to people who do some combination of raising field crops, orchards, vineyards, poultry, or other livestock. A farmer might own the farmed land or might work as a labourer on land owned by others, but in advanced economies, a farmer is usually a farm owner, while employees of the farm are known as farm workers, or farmhands. However, in the not so distant past a farmer was a person who promotes or improves the growth of (a plant, crop, etc.) by labor and attention, land or crops or raises animals (as livestock or fish).
History
Farming has been dated back as far as the Neolithic era. By the Bronze Age, the Sumerians had an agriculture specialized labour force by 5000–4000 BCE, and heavily depended on irrigation to grow crops. They relied on three-person teams when harvesting in the spring. The Ancient Egypt farmers farmed and relied and irrigated their water from the Nile.

Paul Harvey
Paul Harvey Aurandt (September 4, 1918 – February 28, 2009), better known as Paul Harvey, was a conservative American radio broadcaster for the ABC Radio Networks. He broadcast News and Comment on weekday mornings and mid-days, and at noon on Saturdays, as well as his famous The Rest of the Story segments. From the 1950s through the 1990s, Harvey's programs reached as many as 24 million people a week. Paul Harvey News was carried on 1,200 radio stations, 400 Armed Forces Network stations and 300 newspapers.
Career
Early years
Harvey was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The son of a policeman killed in 1921, Harvey made radio receivers as a young boy. He attended Tulsa Central High School where a teacher, Isabelle Ronan, was "impressed by his voice." On her recommendation, he started working at KVOO in Tulsa in 1933, when he was 14. His first job was helping clean up. Eventually he was allowed to fill in on the air, reading commercials and the news.
While attending the University of Tulsa, he continued working at KVOO, first as an announcer, and later as a program director. Harvey, at age nineteen spent three years as a station manager for KFBI AM, now known as KFDI, a radio station that once had studios in Salina, Kansas. From there, he moved to a newscasting job at KOMA in Oklahoma City, and then to KXOK, in St. Louis in 1938, where he was Director of Special Events and a roving reporter.

The documentary features the values and traditions they have in common and the challenges of adapting to new technologies, passing the farm to the next generation and lessons learned from a life on the farm. God said, "I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bales, yet gentle enough to yean lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-comb pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the leg of a meadowlark."
It had to be somebody who'd plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed, and brake, and disk, and plow, and plant, and tie the fleece and strain the milk, . Somebody who'd bale a family together with the soft, strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh, and then sigh and then reply with smiling eyes when his son says that he wants to spend his life doing what Dad does. "So God made a farmer."

Tucked away between the sea and the backwaters and hidden in the shadows of coconut palms, is Kuttanad, a region in the southern state of Kerala. Referred to as the Venice of the East, the waterway intertwines with everything and all life revolves around it. The Film attempts to unfold the various facets of the land and life of a farmer from Kuttanad.
International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala
Santosh is an acclaimed cinematographer, director and producer who has worked in Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil cinema. An alumnus of FTII, he has to his credit over 12 national awards, of which five are for cinematography and others for direction and production. He has won several international awards at prestigious festivals. His most acclaimed films are The Terrorist, Halo, Soka, Malli, Navarasa, Tahaan, Before the Rains and Prarambha.
About PSBT
The Public Service Broadcasting Trust, India, commissions, produces and mentors 60+ independent documentary films a year. Our library of 600 docus have been screened at more than 750 film festivals worldwide, winning close to 200 awards. 50 percent of docs are made by women and two thirds starting out filmmakers.
